Utah Territory Map, 1859.

Map of the route followed by Capt. Simpson's expedition from Camp Floyd to Fort Bridger in 1858, and from Camp Floyd across the Great Basin of Utah and through Nevada in 1859. The map has been inlaid and forms the central portion of the "Map of Utah Territory...Compiled in the Bureau of Topographical Engineers...1858." An inscription notes the map was a gift to Maj. Frederick Dodge, who helped James Simpson with information about the Indians and their languages.

James Hervey Simpson was a West Point cadet who served with the Topographical Corps to explore and survey the Green Bay, Wis., area. He later surveyed the Santa Fe Trail in the late 1840s and mapped out routes to California in the 1850s within the Utah Territory, where he was named chief of topographical engineers.
